One-to-One Friends: Tom & Joe
Joe has been frustrated by many losses since he went to skilled nursing after a stroke. One of his simple wishes was “to have a decent cup of coffee and someone sensible to talk to”. Joe is a Pearl Harbor survivor who has outlived his friends and family. Tom is a younger volunteer confronting his own increasing disability from Parkinson’s. He wanted to visit someone “with a good story to tell”. Joe and Tom have learned an enormous amount about each other over gallons of coffee. Joe says,” I can talk to Tom about ANYthing….Talk about things I haven’t talked about in years. “ Tom says, “I have learned so much from Joe….if he can go through everything he has gone through and still be so grateful to be alive, so can I.”
